Hyundai will launch the Grand i10-based sedan on February 4th, a day before the 2014 Auto Expo starts for the media, according to an Overdrive report. Based on the same BA platform as the Grand i10 hatch, the sedan will rival the likes of the Honda Amaze, Maruti Dzire and the Chevrolet Sail.
When Hyundai developed the second generation i10 for the international market, a separate strategy was thought for India. The i10 was a tad small compared to the rivals and hence, engineers decided to increase the wheelbase of the new i10 and as a result offer more cabin and boot space.
This worked for the Korean manufacturer; the Grand i10 has gone on to do very well. The new 1.1-litre, U2 diesel has proven to be good performer and an ideal match for the car. Now, Hyundai India is developing yet another car based on the i10, the Grand i10 sedan. The Korean manufacturer has been present in almost every mass segment except the highly competitive entry sedan class. The segment has been dominated by the Dzire an Amaze with total sales of the cars even exceeding a few hatchbacks.
Hyundai definitely wants a slice of this pie and will launch the new sedan before the upcoming Auto Expo. The car will be less than 4m long and will hence be priced competitively (lesser than competition).
The car is also expected to offer the same 1.1-litre diesel and 1.2-litre petrol engines seen in the Grand i10. Expect the car to also offer first in segment features and decent cabin and boot space. While the car won’t be as powerful as the Amaze or even the Dzire, fuel efficiency is claimed to be impressive
Based on the pictures from indianautosblog, it seems that the sedan will share most parts including the rear door with the hatchback. Hyundai designers have given the car a stubby boot, ensuring that it ducks under the crucial 4 meter length.
