Volvo is set to reveal a new concept car at next month's Detroit auto show, and with just a month to go 'till the launch Volvo has given us several previews of the car. The Concept XC Coupé will be quite a departure from the sleek coupe that we saw a couple months ago at the Frankfurt motor show, and it appears to be a response to the growing popularity of the compact crossover bodystyle.
The Concept XC Coupé appears to take cues from the C30 hatch, but remixes the packaging into a taller vehicle with a much higher ground clearance. The design of the traditional Volvo beltline has been reworked, and features much sharper curves. The design of the rear hatch also represents a bit of a stylistic departure for Volvo, though the two-tiered design of the headlights is something that we've seen on some recent Volvo concept cars.
The front fascia is very similar to that of the Volvo Concept Coupé that was revealed at the Frankfurt motor show. The concept's overall size does suggest that it is closer to the C30 than the XC60, so perhaps Volvo is sensing that the Mini Cooper Countryman could use some friendly competition in that segment.
The vehicle doesn't appear quite production ready, so don't expect these to flood showrooms immediately after the Detroit auto show. But we wouldn't be surprised if a three-door or five-door version of this concept vehicle would be revisited in the near future
