Same Deutz-Fahr to launch Lamborghini tractors in India

Italian farm equipment maker Same Deutz-Fahr (SDF) Group on Thursday introduced its premium tractor under the Lamborghini brand in India.
The company is introducing a 30-horse power (HP) tractor initially under the brand and planning to expand the range to up to 70-80 HP going forward. It is yet to finalise the price of the products.
“We are first introducing the 30-HP Lamborghini tractor in India, this will be imported from our plants in Europe. We are testing the market response with this product and see which model will be commercially launched,” SDF India managing director and CEO Bhanu Sharma told PTI here.
The company currently manufactures higher HP Lamborghini tractors at its Ranipet plant and exports them to mainly Europe and Australia. When asked about the possible price of the Lamborghini tractor, he said it would depend on the specifications and also on the power but the 30-HP model at its current European price could cost around Rs.12 lakh. “We expect to finalise which model will be launched under the brand by the second half of next year, and gradually depending on response, we will expand the range,” Sharma said.
The Lamborghini tractors will be at a premium. It is more sporty and stylish and can have a variety of applications, not only in fields but also in resorts, stadium for mowing grass, he added.
“There will be separate dealers for this brand and we will have doorstep service facility as this is premium product,” Sharma added.
SDF Group had gained ownership of the Lamborghini brand of tractors in 1973 following the acquisition of Trattori Lamborghini, founded by Ferruccio Lamborghini -- creator of the Lamborghini cars. The sports car business of Lamborghini continues to be under Automobili Lamborghini SpA, which is a part of the Volkswagen Group. Out of the four brands -- Same, Deutz-Fahr, Lamborghini and Hurlimann -- that the SDF Group has, it sells only the Deutz-Fahr brand in India currently. Sharma said the SDF group is expanding the range of its offerings in India with plans to launch at least three models in the 35-40 HP range.
“Currently, our presence is only in the 40-HP and above segment but once we launch the lower range tractors, we will be present in the segment which is about 60% of the Indian tractor market,” Sharma said.
The group is currently investing Rs.300 crore on building fresh capacity at the plant, adding machinery and other field requirements for the next 18-24 months. At present, the company’s plant has a capacity to produce 18,000 tractors and 25,000 engines annually, catering to both domestic and export demands.
